Tell us a bit about yourselves
I’m Rex Greatrex, I’m from Wenvoe in the Vale of Glamorgan.
I’ve basically worked in the water industry for the last 41 years – 20 years with Welsh Water and the 21 in the private sector.
I’ve been an engineer, I’ve worked around Wales and I’ve worked all over England as well.
It was a very demanding role. Basically, my job was to supervise the installation of all water mains into the site, inspect the plumbing of all the houses and other day-to-day operations on-site.
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
Well, we’ve got two dogs so I don’t have too much spare time. I play bowls as well. I tried playing golf but I’m not very good at it.
Apart from that, I do a bit of gardening and I like taking the dogs out.
What made you want to start your own franchise?
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I was made redundant.
I was too young to retire so knew I wanted to keep working and see what was available.
I didn’t really want to go back to the water industry because it’s hard applying for jobs when you’re 60.
So, I then thought about becoming my own boss. We’ve always wanted to start our own little cafe or coffee bar and then we just so happened to come across Coffee Blue online.
We chose to go the franchising route because everything’s there already. The franchisor is the one who’s done all the ground work and have made all the mistakes for me.
I’m coming in on your tailcoats now and, hopefully, it all goes really well.
Why Coffee Blue?
I like the setup of the vans. Immediately, it looked better than the competition’s.
Being able to work with a local company throughout all this is a massive help as well. If anything goes wrong, you’re only down the road.
It was nice knowing that you were always here for any support I needed.
What’s the response been like from friends and family?
They’re all excited about it. They think it’s a really good idea.
Both of my sons think I’m absolutely mad but everyone’s on-board and are full of support so I’m looking forward to it.
What advice would you give those interested in joining Coffee Blue?
My advice is: do research, but first and foremost, get in touch with Coffee Blue and have the tour.
Come in, see what it’s all about and have a look at the setup.
I think as long as you do your research and you’re happy then things just happen to flow.
What’s your favourite coffee to make and drink?
To make is a latte and cappuccino. To drink is a mocha. My least favourite to make is a macchiato.
What are your hopes for the future?
That this a roaring success. I want to make a decent living and hopefully build something that my sons might want to take over in the future.
For now, though, I want to hit the ground running.
