Coffee Blue has launched a brand new mobile coffee service in the West Somerset and Taunton area.
Our newest baristas Trevor & Shona bring a deep passion for coffee and vast experience running their own business – a true recipe for Coffee Blue success!
We sat down (socially distanced) with Trevor at Coffee Blue HQ to discuss their previous work, hobbies and why they ended up with Coffee Blue.

Without further ado, here’s our talk with West Somerset’s latest and greatest mobile coffee service.
Tell us a bit about yourselves
Both myself and Shona have always grown up in the Taunton and Somerset area.
So, not only do we know the area extremely well, but we’ve built up some good relationships with all sorts of people within the region.
We’re both very family-orientated. We have two boys and one girl.
What sort of jobs you had previously?
Myself; I come from sort of a sporting background. Coaching, sports management – that sort of thing. Football was my sport of choice but I do like all sports.
Shona grew up as a bit of a singer and then went into leisure management and then what she’s working in now which is for the NHS.
We’ve both got sort of a business background. We ran a business for over 10 years in the sporting sector.
The business itself hosted football training camps in association with a major Premier League football club.
We ran the South West region of the camps and welcomed thousands of young footballers during our town. It grew to be quite enormous, to be fair.
What do you like to get up to in your spare time?
We dedicate our spare time to our children, really, and spending time with our friends.
I’m an Arsenal fan and our two boys are football mad so a lot of our time is spent watching them play. Quite often we’re spectators on the sidelines, which ties into how we got the idea for this.
When you’re a parent and you’re stuck watching your kids play football, the first thing you think of is: ‘Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a nice coffee and a slice of cake or bacon roll.’
What made you want to start your own franchise?
Shona and I both absolutely love our coffee. It’s part of our life, really, from the moment we wake up.
As well as loving our coffee, we’ve also run some businesses before. That, along with the opportunity to do something really exciting and meaningful in our community, it just links together really well.
We looked at lots of different options and when we looked more into detail about Coffee Blue it was really clear that not only was the spec of the van absolutely amazing, but some of the additional support and knowledge we could get was great.
Whilst you might have a bit of a business background and you might understand different aspects of business, unless you’ve done something like this before, it’s very different.
We obviously looked at doing it ourselves without franchising as an option, but it was very evident that what was on offer with Coffee Blue was exceptional.
It’s nice to understand that if there is an issue or if you’re unsure of something then there’s someone you can go to for help.
Plus there’s things such as the marketing support and the real industrial know-how as well – it’s really good to have that.
Why Coffee Blue?
Some people might look at the price of it – but that was never really a big thing for us.
It was more to do with the quality of the van conversion first and foremost – that was very important to us.
We did briefly look at some other coffee franchises, but we didn’t go into any discussions with them because they didn’t appeal to us in any form.
What’s the response been like from friends and family?
We kept it under wraps for quite a while – until the very last minute, really. So, it’s only been the last week/two weeks where we’ve started to tell people.
Everyone we’ve told has been really excited and have said things like ‘what a fantastic idea’, ‘this is going to do so well’ etc.
The fact we’re doing this as husband and wife as well is quite special.
Yeah, the response has been brilliant. Nothing negative whatsoever.
What advice would you give those interested in joining Coffee Blue?
We are extremely confident that this is going work.
I think when you go into a venture, or even if you’re already running a business, occasionally it can give you sleepless nights.
Me and Shona joke about this all the time: we haven’t yet had one night where we wake up and say: “Oh my gosh, what are we doing?”
We’ve had 100% – if not more – confidence in the model, our ideas and working alongside you guys that it’s going to work. No doubt, whatsoever.
That probably isn’t so much advice, but one thing I would say is providing you believe in it, it will work.
Do things right, have confidence, be innovative and make sure you’re making it the best it can be.
What’s your favourite coffee to make and drink?
I’ve always drunk lattes. But since doing this with Coffee Blue, I’ve become a bit of a flat white fanatic. That extra shot of coffee, especially in the morning, gives you that right hit.
It’s probably one of my favourite ones to make as well, to be fair.
What are your hopes for the future?
We want to have a really good balance of work and family.
Initially, we understand we’re going to have to put in a lot more during the early stages.
Our hopes for the future are to enjoy it and be known in the area as a really good mobile coffee operator and be talked about in a positive way.
